Launched in 1996 the Genesis appeal was the only UK charity dedicated to the prevention of breast cancer
The Nightingale Centre offers state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment services to women and men with breast cancer. Opened in July 2007, the building is situated on the University Hospital of South Manchester complex in Wythenshawe. The Genesis Breast Cancer Prevention Centre is based in Nightingale centre.
The Project
The ethos of the new centre was “PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE”
It was Europe’s first purpose built breast cancer prevention centre and we were delighted to be asked to be part of this project and to help raise funds for this fantastic appeal!
- The new centre was the first in the world to be headed by three internationally acclaimed Professors in the three main areas of Oncology, Genetics and Surgery.
- Europe’s first ‘Professor of Cancer Prevention’ would head the centre.
- With its internationally renowned team of pioneering Breast Cancer Specialists, the Nightingale Centre, which was previously based at Withington Hospital, Manchester, was universally acknowledged as a major success story in breast cancer screening and early detection. Once completed, all this vital work was transferred to the new centre doubling its capacity, making it one of the largest breast screening centres in Europe – the largest outpatients breast service in England – and provides the largest family history clinic and genetic screening programme in the UK.
- It is a Training Centre for specialist breast, plastic and reconstructive surgery.
- It is a major national training centre for radiologists, radiographers and specialist breast care nurses.
- It is a premier International centre for research into all aspects of breast cancer including genetics, imaging, laboratory studies, new approaches and preventative drugs.
- No animal testing will be involved.
- The Centre will share its knowledge and results and these will be filtered down to all other Centres across the UK.
